How to preserve your bridal bouquet
The bridal bouquet is the only part of a wedding that can be kept just as it was. But you have to decide fast: what you do in the first 24 to 48 hours determines what result you can get.
First things first: the first few hours
As soon as the party ends, the bouquet has to go into fresh water and a cool place. If you are going to preserve it with a professional method, arrange it before the wedding: most studios ask for the bouquet within 48 hours and give specific instructions.
If you are leaving on your honeymoon the next day, hand the task to someone you trust. It is the most common mistake: the bouquet waits a week on a table and by then there is nothing to be done.
The five options
| Method | Result | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Hang-drying | Whole bouquet, muted tones | Free, you do it at home. The most fragile |
| Silica gel | Shape and color almost intact | Homemade, inexpensive. Flower by flower, takes work |
| Framed pressing | A frame with the flowers pressed flat | Very pretty as an object. It is no longer a bouquet |
| Professional freeze-drying | The whole bouquet, almost as on day one | The best result and the most expensive. Weeks of processing |
| Epoxy resin | Paperweights, coasters, jewelry | Individual flowers are preserved, not the bouquet |
How to dry the whole bouquet at home
- Remove the ribbon and wrapping, and strip the leaves from the stems.
- If the bouquet is very compact, take it apart: packed tightly, the flowers in the center rot instead of drying.
- Hang it upside down in a dark, dry, ventilated closet.
- Two to three weeks.
- Reassemble it and set it with aerosol hairspray from thirty centimeters (about a foot) away. It adds stiffness and keeps it from falling apart.
The full step-by-step for each technique is in how to dry flowers at home.
What to realistically expect
No home technique keeps the original color. White flowers turn ivory or beige; red ones darken; pale pink roses end up almost tea-colored. It is part of the result and it usually looks lovely, but it is better to know beforehand than to be disappointed three weeks later.
An alternative no one considers
Take good photos of the bouquet on the day itself, in natural light and against a neutral background, before the ceremony. It sounds unromantic, and it is what most people end up being grateful for: it is the only version of the bouquet that doesn't deteriorate. Then dry it anyway.
