How to make roses last longer

A good-quality rose lasts between five and eight days. With the right care it can reach ten or twelve; with the wrong care, it droops in three. Almost all of the difference is decided in the first two hours.

What has the most impact

  1. Cut the stem at an angle, underwater. One centimeter (less than half an inch) is enough. The angled cut increases the absorption surface, and doing it underwater keeps an air bubble from getting in and blocking the stem. It is the step that makes the biggest difference and the one most people skip.
  2. Remove every leaf that sits below the waterline. They rot in two days and contaminate the whole vase. It is the number one reason a bouquet dies before its time.
  3. A clean vase. Not rinsed: washed with dish soap. Bacteria left over from the previous bouquet start working from minute zero.
  4. Room-temperature water, neither ice-cold nor hot.
  5. Change the water every two days and trim half a centimeter off the stem each time.

What helps after that

  1. Use the little packet of flower food. It is not marketing: it combines sugar, an acidifier and a biocide. If you don't have one, a teaspoon of sugar and two drops of bleach per liter (about a quart) do something similar.
  2. Keep them away from fruit. Ripe fruit releases ethylene, the hormone that tells the flower to age. A fruit bowl next to the vase cuts the bouquet's life in half. That is not an exaggeration.
  3. No direct sun, no heaters, no air conditioning blowing at the vase.
  4. At night, move it to a cool room if you can. Flower shops keep everything in a cooler for this reason.
  5. Remove flowers as they die. A wilted rose speeds up its neighbors because of the same ethylene.

Three tricks that don't work

  • Aspirin. The idea is to acidify the water, but the dose needed is so high that in practice it changes nothing.
  • The copper coin. Copper is a fungicide in theory; a modern Argentine coin has almost no copper and releases nothing into the water.
  • Clear soda. It adds sugar, yes, but also a lot of residue that feeds bacteria. It ends up being counterproductive.

If the rose has already bent its head

When the neck bends, there is an air bubble blocking the stem. It can be saved: cut three centimeters (about an inch) underwater and submerge the whole stem, lying flat, in lukewarm water for half an hour. The full technique is in how to revive wilted flowers.

What no trick can fix

A rose that arrived after many days in cold storage will not recover. Care stretches what is there; it does not create freshness. That is why where you buy matters. How long each species can be expected to last is in how long flowers last.
