Flowers that mean eternal love

There is no single flower of eternal love: there are several, and each one says it differently. It is worth choosing based on what kind of "forever" you want to convey.

The ones that say it

• Red rose. The universal symbol of lasting love. It is the option that needs no explanation and runs no risk of being misread.
• White lily. Pure and enduring feelings. It appears at weddings and memorials alike, precisely because its meaning goes beyond the moment.
• Red carnation. Less obvious than the rose, with the same meaning of deep love, and with an advantage that suits the theme: it lasts three weeks. A concrete nod to "forever."
• Red camellia. Love that endures over time, in the Japanese tradition. Little known here, and very elegant.
• Blue rose. The impossible, the unique, the unforgettable. With one caveat: it doesn't exist in nature, it is always dyed. It is covered in blue, black and rainbow roses.
• Preserved rose. Literal more than symbolic: it is a real rose that lasts for years. It is covered in what eternal roses are.

The classic combination

Red roses with white lilies: passion and purity in the same arrangement. It is the most common formula for important anniversaries, and it works because both flowers have enough presence not to cancel each other out.

A practical caveat: if there are cats in the home, don't send lilies, they are seriously toxic to them. In that case, red roses with white calla lilies give a similar result.

What makes the difference

This is what gets said least and matters most: no flower says "eternal love" on its own. The card does.

A bouquet of red roses with no message says "romantic love," which is much less specific. The same bouquet with one line naming a date, a place or something that happened between you says exactly what you meant. There are examples in what to write on the card.

For a specific anniversary

If it is a wedding anniversary, tradition assigns a flower to each year: it is in the flower for each wedding anniversary. Choosing that one and explaining why usually means more than any large bouquet.
