Hydrangea Meaning
The hydrangea is the flower of volume: a single stem is the size of what would take fifteen in another species. That is why it builds huge arrangements with very few pieces and is a wedding favorite.
What it symbolizes
- Heartfelt gratitude. Its dominant meaning in the West: you give it to thank someone for something specific.
- Abundance and prosperity. Because of the many tiny florets that make up each head.
- Deep understanding. In Japan it is associated with a sincere apology.
There is an old, minority reading that links it to coldness. It does not apply in Argentina, and no one reads it that way.
The color trick
This is the loveliest curiosity about the flower: its color depends on the soil pH. In acidic soil the same plant produces blue flowers; in alkaline soil, pink ones. It is not a different variety — it is chemistry. That is why a hydrangea you transplant can change color the following year.
By color
| Color | Reading |
|---|---|
| Blue | Apology, understanding, calm |
| Pink | Sincere love, romance |
| White | Purity, elegance — the most used at weddings |
| Purple | A wish to understand each other better |
A care tip almost no one knows
A cut hydrangea drinks water through its petals too. If it starts to droop, submerge the whole head in cold water for twenty minutes: in most cases it revives. It is the one case where wetting the flower is fine. More techniques in how to revive wilted flowers.
