What sunflowers mean (and how much they cost)
The sunflower is the flower of admiration and loyalty. The association comes from heliotropism: while the plant is young, its head follows the sun throughout the day. Hence the idea of always facing the same direction.
What it says
- Sincere admiration — it is a gift that says "I hold you in high regard" without being romantic.
- Loyalty and constancy — it works very well between friends of many years.
- Optimism — with its size and color, it changes the mood of a room.
When they are available
The sunflower is a warm-season flower. In Argentina its best stretch runs from late spring to early fall (roughly November to April, since the seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere); outside that window availability drops and the heads are smaller. It is not a flower you can get the same way all year round, and any florist who tells you otherwise is selling you smoke.
What determines the price
Three things: the season, the size of the head and whether it goes alone or in an arrangement. A sunflower bouquet out of season can cost quite a bit more than in January, simply because there are fewer of them. In our catalog the price of each option is always shown on the product page — you don't have to ask to find out.
How to care for them
They are big flowers and they drink a lot of water: check the level every day, not every other day. They need a heavy vase or they end up off balance. And it is a good idea to strip off any leaves that sit below the waterline, because they rot quickly and foul the rest of the bouquet.
Availability of each flower changes with the season. If you are looking for a specific flower, ask us before ordering and we will confirm whether we have it.
