Daffodil (Narcissus) Meaning

The narcissus is one of the first flowers to appear at the end of winter, and all its meaning comes from that: it is the flower that announces the hard part is over.

What it symbolizes

  • Rebirth and new beginnings. Its main meaning.
  • Hope. That is why it is used in cancer awareness campaigns in several countries.
  • A single daffodil brings bad luck; a bunch, prosperity. It is an old but very widespread superstition: if you are giving them, give several.

The myth

Narcissus was a young man of extraordinary beauty who scorned everyone who fell in love with him. As punishment, the gods made him fall in love with his own reflection in a pool; he stayed there gazing at himself until he wasted away, and the flower grew on that spot. That is where the word "narcissism" comes from, along with the secondary reading of vanity the flower carries.

The practical warning

Cut daffodils release a sap that kills the other flowers in the vase. It is not a myth: that sap clogs the water-conducting vessels of roses, tulips and lilies.

The fix is simple: keep the daffodils alone in water for 12 to 24 hours, change the water, and only then build the mixed bouquet. And do not recut their stems once they are in the arrangement, because that releases sap again.

When to give them

For a beginning: a move, a new job, being discharged from the hospital, the birth of a child. It is the "this starts now" flower. In Argentina it is mainly available in August and September.
