Flowers to say thank you

Saying thank you with flowers has one advantage over a WhatsApp message: it makes people stop. Someone has to receive it, find a place for it, and see it for a week. It's a thank-you that takes up space.

The flowers of gratitude

• Pink roses. They are the flower of gratitude. Affection and appreciation with no romantic reading.
• Hydrangeas. Their main meaning in the West is precisely heartfelt gratitude.
• Freesias. Trust: for thanking someone who stood by you.
• Alstroemeria. Friendship and support. And they last two weeks.
• A mixed bouquet of seasonal flowers. The safe choice when you don't want the color to say anything in particular.

How not to send the wrong message

It's the only precaution that matters. If the thank-you is for a colleague, a boss, a doctor, a neighbor, or anyone you're not close to:

• No red. No red roses, and no arrangement dominated by red.
• Sign with your name and context: "The Gómez family" or "The IT team," not just your first name.
• Say explicitly why. "Thank you for everything you did on Thursday" closes off any ambiguity.
• Consider a plant: an orchid or a succulent carries no ambiguous emotional reading and lasts for months.

When it works best

• After someone had your back in a difficult situation.
• For the medical team that cared for a family member.
• For someone who hosted you at their home for a few days.
• For a teacher at the end of the school year.
• For a client or a supplier, in a professional key; we go into it in corporate gifts with flowers.

The detail that changes everything

Being specific. "Thanks for everything" is a formula; "thank you for staying until three in the morning on Saturday" is a thank-you. The first gets forgotten, the second gets kept. More examples in what to write on the card.
