Flowers for a friend

Friendship is the occasion with the fewest rules, and that's why so many people get it wrong: they send the same thing they'd send a partner, and the message ends up off.

The flowers of friendship

• Sunflowers. Probably the best option. Big, cheerful, impossible to misread.
• Yellow roses. The official flower of friendship. And they surprise, because nobody expects them.
• Gerberas. Pure color, nothing solemn.
• Alstroemeria. Their meaning is literally lasting friendship, and they last two weeks.
• A mixed-color bouquet. When you want it to read as a general celebration.

The only thing to avoid is red roses, unless there's an inside joke involved.

Flowers keep someone company; they don't fix things. What makes them count is the card: "I'm here, you don't have to reply" is better than "everything will be fine." The first asks nothing of her; the second makes her responsible for your optimism.

The most underrated gift

A small bouquet on a day with no reason. It costs next to nothing and has an outsized effect, precisely because there was no reason. Birthday flowers all get forgotten; the bouquet from an ordinary Tuesday doesn't.
