Which flowers to bring to a wake

It is a moment when nobody wants to be researching etiquette. Here are the essentials.

What is usually sent

  • Wreath. The most formal format. It is sent on behalf of a family, a company or a group. It comes with a ribbon and a message.
  • Casket spray. Elongated, it rests on top of the casket or beside it. An alternative to the wreath.
  • Arrangement or basket. More restrained and personal. Appropriate when the relationship is close.
  • Bouquet. To bring by hand, or to send to the family's home in the following days.

Which flowers

White, above all: lilies, chrysanthemums, roses and gladioli. White is the color of mourning and respect. You can add touches of green and, if the person was deeply loved and had a cheerful spirit, a soft color or two — but that is the family's decision, not the sender's.

What to write on the ribbon

Something brief plus the sender's name is customary: “With deepest sympathy — The Gómez Family”, “With love — The Sales Team”, “Rest in peace”. It is not the place for long messages.
