How to choose your bridal bouquet
The bridal bouquet is the only arrangement at the wedding that shows up in every photo and has to be held for hours. Those two things, how it looks and how much it weighs, drive almost the entire choice.
The shapes
| Shape | What it looks like | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Compact and spherical, with the flowers cut close together | The most popular. Goes with everything |
| Cascade | Falls forward in a teardrop shape | Dresses with a train and formal weddings |
| Wild or unstructured | Loose, with visible stems and foliage | Country weddings, a natural look |
| Arm sheaf | Long stems, carried resting on the forearm | Very elegant with calla lilies or lilies |
| Single flower | One stem, usually a calla lily or an orchid | Civil ceremonies and minimalist weddings |
The weight issue
It is the thing people think about least and suffer from most. A large round bouquet made of dense flowers, such as hydrangeas or thick-stemmed roses, can weigh more than two kilos (about 4.5 lb), and you have to hold it in one hand through the ceremony, the photo session and the grand entrance.
Ask to try it first. Hold it for ten minutes with your arm in the real position. If it bothers you after five minutes, on the wedding day it will be unbearable.
How to pair it with the dress
- Proportion: the bouquet should not be wider than your hips. An oversized bouquet makes the bride look smaller in photos.
- A highly detailed dress (lace, embroidery, ruffles) → a simple, compact bouquet, so the two don't compete.
- A plain, minimalist dress → this is where a bouquet with more texture and volume works.
- Off-white or ivory: be careful with pure white flowers, which make the dress look yellowish. Ivory, peach or green tones work better.
- The ribbon on the handle can echo a detail from the dress or the decor. It is an inexpensive touch that gets noticed.
Flowers that last a whole day
A bridal bouquet spends many hours out of water. The ones that hold up well: roses, carnations, alstroemeria, calla lilies, orchids, statice, baby's breath, eucalyptus. The ones that struggle: hydrangeas, tulips, gerberas, dahlias. If you still want hydrangeas, let us know so the design accounts for it.
When to decide
Two to three months ahead, with the dress already chosen. It is important to know which flowers are available in the month of your wedding before you fall in love with a photo: it is all in seasonal flowers for your wedding.
And afterwards
If you want to keep it, you have to decide before the party: the options and timing are in how to preserve your bridal bouquet.
Availability of each flower changes with the season. If you are looking for a specific flower, ask us before ordering and we will confirm whether we have it.
