Which flowers are available in the month of your wedding
The usual order is the opposite of what makes sense: first you build a mood board out of Pinterest photos, and then you ask about price. The problem is that half of those photos are from Northern Hemisphere weddings, in the opposite season.
What's available each month
| Month | Season | Best of that month |
|---|---|---|
| January – February | Summer | Sunflower, hydrangea, gladiolus, dahlia, agapanthus |
| March – April | Fall | Dahlia, chrysanthemum, aster, autumn rose, statice |
| May – June | Fall / winter | Carnation, chrysanthemum, alstroemeria, camellia |
| July – August | Winter | Carnation, camellia, daffodil, hyacinth, first tulips |
| September – October | Spring | Tulip, freesia, lily, peony, garden rose |
| November – December | Spring / summer | Peony, hydrangea, lily, rose, jacaranda |
And the ones available year-round: roses, gerberas, alstroemeria, carnations, lilies, chrysanthemums, calla lilies and orchids. With those alone you can do an entire wedding on any date.
The two short windows
- Peonies: a few weeks between October and November. It is the most requested wedding flower and the one with the narrowest availability. Outside that window there are either none, or they are imported at a price that usually changes the whole budget.
- Locally grown tulips: August to October.
If your wedding doesn't fall in those windows and those flowers are non-negotiable, the budget has to account for it from the start.
Substitutes that work
| If you wanted… | And it's not available, try… |
|---|---|
| Peony | Many-petaled garden rose, ranunculus, dahlia |
| Hydrangea | Snowball viburnum, massed carnations |
| Tulip | Calla lily, lisianthus |
| Lily of the valley | Baby's breath, white statice |
| Freesia | Lisianthus, stock |
How to use this in practice
- First check what's available in the month of your date.
- Build the mood board from that, not the other way around.
- Settle on the color palette before the species: a color can be achieved with several different flowers, and that gives the florist room to work with the best of that week.
- Keep one or two species as "non-negotiable" and leave the rest flexible. That is what gives the best results.
Something almost nobody considers
Getting married in fall or winter has a concrete floral advantage beyond price: the flowers last much longer. An arrangement set up at three in the afternoon on a July day (midwinter in Argentina) still looks flawless at four in the morning. In January, it won't. The details are in winter flowers.
Availability of each flower changes with the season. If you are looking for a specific flower, ask us before ordering and we will confirm whether we have it.
