When Is Mother’s Day in Argentina? (And Why It’s in October)
In Argentina, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of October. It is a movable date, so it changes every year.

Why it’s in October here
Most countries celebrate it in May. Argentina’s exception has a religious origin: the date became tied to the Divine Maternity of Mary, which the Catholic Church commemorated on October 11. The civil celebration gradually attached itself to the Sunday closest to that date.
When the Second Vatican Council moved the religious feast to January 1, the custom was already so rooted in October that it stayed put, and it eventually settled on the third Sunday.
What happens with flowers that week
It is, by far, the biggest demand peak of the year for the Argentine flower trade, ahead of Valentine’s Day. Three concrete, verifiable consequences:
- Wholesale prices go up during the two weeks before. It isn’t the flower shop raising prices: it’s what happens in the market.
- Varieties sell out. Pink roses, lilies and orchids are the first to disappear.
- Delivery time slots fill up. The Saturday before and the Sunday itself are the busiest delivery days of the year.
Booking seven to fifteen days ahead secures the product, the time slot and, in general, a better price.
An advantage of the Argentine date
October is spring here (Argentina is in the Southern Hemisphere), and it’s the best flower season of the year: peonies, tulips, freesias, lilies and garden roses are at their peak. It’s one of the few commercial holidays that lines up with the best natural supply. The details are in spring flowers in Argentina.
If you’re sending from abroad
Watch the date: in Spain, the United States and much of Europe, Mother’s Day is in May; in Mexico, it’s always May 10; in Uruguay, the second Sunday of May. If you live abroad and want to send something to Argentina, the date that counts is the Argentine one. How to do it is explained in how to send flowers to Argentina from another country.
