Father’s Day in Argentina: When It Is and What to Give

In Argentina, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June. Like Mother’s Day, it is a movable date.

Where it comes from

The holiday was born in the United States in 1910, championed by Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of a veteran who raised six children on his own. She chose June because it was her father’s birthday month. The custom spread across the Americas, and Argentina adopted it on the third Sunday of that month.

There was a local attempt to move it to August 24, the birthday of Merceditas, daughter of General San Martín (Argentina’s founding hero). It never caught on, and the June date stuck.

Flowers for Father’s Day?

Yes, and more and more — but you have to change the register. No pastels, no satin bows. What works is an arrangement with sunflowers, anthuriums or lots of foliage, in a wooden or plain ceramic base. And above all, the combined format works: flowers plus a bottle, where the flowers bring the surprise and the bottle brings something tangible. We cover it in flower bouquets for men.

If he says he doesn’t want anything

It’s the standard answer and it’s almost never literal: it usually means “don’t spend money.” What dads do tend to appreciate:

  • Time: going out to eat, doing something together, that asado that keeps getting postponed.
  • Something that fixes a small problem he’s had for months.
  • A printed photo with his kids or grandkids.
  • A letter. Fathers from earlier generations rarely got one.

An advantage of winter

The Argentine date falls in the middle of winter, which opens up options that make no sense in June in the Northern Hemisphere: a good red wine, a whisky, a picada, a hot breakfast. And flowers last much longer — it’s explained in winter flowers.
