Winter Flowers: What’s Available and Why They Last Longer

There’s an idea that in winter “there are no flowers.” There’s less variety, that’s true. But there’s a trade-off almost nobody uses to their advantage: in the cold, a bouquet lasts much longer. What holds up for five days in January (midsummer in Argentina) can last twelve in July.

Plants that bloom in the middle of winter

  • Camellia: from May to August, just when everything else is dormant.
  • Cyclamen: the classic winter potted plant, it blooms for months.
  • Primrose: strong colors, very hardy, excellent for a balcony.
  • Pansy and viola: they handle frost with no problem.
  • Kalanchoe: a succulent that blooms all winter with almost no watering.

The real enemy isn’t the cold: it’s the heater

A radiator or a hot-air vent dries out a bouquet in two days. Four rules:

  1. Keep it away from heaters, radiators and hot air.
  2. Also away from direct drafts of icy air.
  3. Water at room temperature, not ice-cold from the tap: the thermal shock closes off the stem’s vessels.
  4. At night, move it to a cooler room if you can.

Winter’s special dates

June, July and August bring Father’s Day, Friend’s Day (July 20), Sweetness Week and Children’s Day. There’s less competition for stock than in October, so you can get good quality without booking quite so far ahead.
